Title:
Graphing Calculator Zone
Subject:
Mathematics
Grade:
6
Time Frame:
2 days
Summary:
Students will discover important buttons on the calculator, how to graph an equation, and how to walk the line of an equation using the Calculator-Based Ranger.
Tasks:
1.Students will be given a graphing calculator to explore the different features available.
2.After students have been given enough time to explore, a labsheet (Graphing Calculator Zone) will be provided in order introduce the different buttons on the calculator. Important buttons include: X,T,O,n, ^, y=, GRAPH, TABLE, and ZOOM. Students will write down where its at what it does on their labsheet.
3.Students will also learn how to graph an equation using the graphing calculator and then draw what they see on their labsheets.
4.Students will complete the labsheet by comparing two different equations telling how they're similar or different.
5.Students will then be able to enter a given equation into their calculator and use the Calculator-Based to try and Walk the Line of the graph.
Objectives:
  • Students will be able to identify and provide descriptions of buttons on the graphing calculator.
  • Students will be able to graph an equation on the graphing calculator.
  • Students will compare two equations of the graphing calculator and share how they're similar and different.
Assessment:
Formative Assesments will be used throughout the lesson.
A quiz will be given to students to see if they can accurately decipher important buttons on the calculator and what they do as well as if they can graph a line.
Resources:
  • Graphing Calculators
  • Calculator-Based Rangers
  • Walk the Line Labsheet
  • Graphing Calculator Zone Labsheet
Examples:
  • Not available.
Reflection:
Students really enjoyed this lesson. I taught it last year. They loved being able to explore the graphing calculator and walk the line of a line on the graph. Students also took in a lot of new information regarding the graphing calculator.
